HistoryOur first location began in Barbara Katz's own carport in 1959. There, at age 30, she started by selling clothes to her neighbors and friends to support her 3 small children.
A few years later, the young entrepreneur outgrew her home store and opened her first free-standing location in North Miami Beach. 3 more stores were opened in South Miami, Bal Harbour, and Plantation, Florida. Her 5th store, in Boca Raton, opened in the early 1980's, which ultimately is where Ms. Katz decided to reside. Being a meticulous, hands-on owner, and realizing the potential of the Boca area, Barbara Katz closed her other locations to focus and grow the business in Glades Plaza.
The specialty store has come full circle by once again catering to the young woman that Ms. Katz was herself when she began her business, while maintaining the loyal following the store has cultivated. Barbara Katz has adapted to the times and will continue to be the leading designer specialty store in South Florida that draws customers from all over the world.
The Next GenerationLauri Katz- Parker took over the Boca Raton store in 2009, after her mother Barbara Katz, passed away. The start of her life at Barbara Katz began 58 years ago when Lauri was four years old. She spent as much time as she was allowed in the home garage store, so she could be close to her mom. Lauri always loved putting clothes together, matching up colors and helping the customers with their outfits. When her mom opened the first free standing store in North Miami Beach, Lauri was there every afternoon after elementary and middle school to help, or commonly you could find her taking a nap in one of the dressing rooms.
In her 11th year of high school, she enrolled in the DECA program, (Distributive Education Clubs of America) where she spent the early morning in classes and then worked full time at the North Miami Beach store earning all the credits she needed to graduate high school a year early with honors. She continued to work at Barbara Katz for the next year learning everything she could from her mom, and at 18 she went on to college at FSU in Tallahassee, where she majored in Business and Fashion Merchandising.
Next, she moved to New York City to further her education at Tobe Coburn, School for Fashion Merchandising & Business Careers, on Madison Avenue. While attending Tobe Coburn in New York, Lauri worked at Kirby Block Buying Office and B. Altman department store as a dress buyer. Two years later, she was missing her home town and moved back to Miami. Lauri then went on to work at Barbara Katz as the accessories buyer for the then three stores in Miami. Shortly after, she became the store manager of the Kendall Location as well as continuing to be the accessories buyer for all three stores.
After a few years, she left BK to spread her wings and joined the Stagg Shops in Coral Gables, and the New Man stores from France, who were opening their first store in the U.S. in Miami. She was the store buyer for both of their women’s department. She worked with them for several years until she decided to make a move.
Next, Lauri became the store manager for August Max in Ft. Lauderdale, and then on to Colony shops, a Florida based women’s specialty chain, while there she opened and set up new locations and ultimately stayed in the Galleria mall managing and running a now very successful store ranking # 2 in the company from her efforts. After several years Lauri returned to Barbara Katz as her mom wanted her back to help her with the business. She worked until 1989, when her daughter Cassie was born.
In 1995, when Cassie was 6 years old, Lauri decided she needed to get back to work but, only wanted to have her own business. So, she leased space in the Boca Raton Barbara Katz, where she bought and sold fine and designer jewelry from Italy. Later, she incorporated makeup, accessories and more diverse jewelry designers from all over the world.
Since 2009, Lauri has owned and run the store in Boca on her own, making many changes along the way, always growing and learning to improve with the times, and needs of her clientele.
